Food fraud refers to any practice intended to deceive consumers about the identity, quality, or composition of food for financial gain.

Because these activities are covert, it is difficult to accurately determine their global economic impact; however, it is estimated that they cause losses of around $40 billion per year for producers. 

Currently, ISO 20813:2023 “Molecular biomarker analysis. Methods of analysis for the detection and identification of animal species in food and food products (nucleic acid-based methods)” establishes a standardized procedure for the qualitative detection of species-specific DNA in food products using conventional PCR or real-time PCR techniques.

This technology allows us to detect the DNA of any animal species with high precision and sensitivity. In addition, results are obtained in a few hours, which helps to make quick decisions.
