Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are a type of cell line that were obtained in 1969. Since, they have been widely used as a mammalian cell model for both biological and medical research, spanning fields such as genomics, gene expression, and nutritional studies.

It is also used for pre-clinical trials, such as toxicity tests, but where they have really stood out is in the synthesis of biopharmaceuticals such as antibodies and therapeutic recombinant proteins.

There are various reasons as to why this cell line has been established as the best expression system, but the following are the main ones:

  • Its proteins undergo post-translational modifications very similar to those in human cells, thus avoiding immunogenicity.
  • Scaling up to larger volume bioreactors is easier compared to other cell lines.
  • They present greater stability against changes in culture such as pH, oxygen level, temperature or cell density.

How can I maximize my CHO cell culture?

Traditionally, fetal bovine serum is used for cell culture, but this product has been replaced by other compounds in laboratories for years due to its price, ethical implications, high batch-to-batch variability and risk of disease transmission.

Instead, a range of culture media has grown in order to maximize the growth and synthesis of products in a safer, more economical, ethical and stable manner.

These media are divided into complex and chemically defined, but to enhance their effect they are often supplemented. Of all the supplements, peptones are the ones that stand out due to their results and long history of use in laboratories.

But for peptones to have maximum effect on CHO cells they must lack endotoxins and maintain large growth factors. And this is only offered by our Condalow® peptone line.

Condalow®, the endotoxin-free and ultrafiltrated peptone

Due to its production process, Condalow® is the only peptone on the market that maintains all the stimulating compounds that are usually eliminated by ultrafiltration, while ensuring a very low level of endotoxins (<200 EU/g).

This product has shown the ability to greatly stimulate the growth of CHO cells. It is also able to have an effect on the synthesis of products such as immunoglobulin G, providing a considerable increase.

The Condalow® peptones are divided into Condalow® Meat, Condalow® Casein, Condalow® Wheat and Condalow® Soy. All of them are GMO-free, and the soy and wheat are animal-free.
